DETAILS

Butterflies are one of nature’s most fascinating and beautiful creatures. Join Eric Volden at Mounds View Grasslands for this informative look at area butterflies including butterfly identification, life histories, larval host plants, nectaring sources, survival strategies, and upcoming area counts. Eric has helped with Regal Fritillary and Baltimore Checkerspot surveys on area Prairie Enthusiasts properties over the last few years and spent almost 40 years working at nature centers as a naturalist and environmental educator in Nebraska and Wisconsin. There are more than 28,000 species of butterflies around the world and they are very important to us beyond just the pure aesthetics. Butterflies serve as indicators of a healthy environment, are important plant pollinators, and are one of the most important food sources for many other species of animals. Learn more at this workshop which will also include a hike to view and identify some beautiful and unique area butterflies and their associated plants. We hope to see Regal Fritillaries, Baltimore Checkerspots, Common Buckeyes, Monarchs, emerging hairstreaks and much more. Deadline to Register is Thursday, June 29th 5:00 PM
